CBD and the Battle for Quality Sleep
Jessica Carrillo was an elementary school teacher and then a college professor. She taught for 24 years. In 2022, she started selling CBD, and she doesn't think she's going back.
As a Christian mother and a professor, Jessica admits she had a bad perception of CBD (cannabidiol) when it first became legal in 2018 because of its association with marijuana. But Jessica also had a problem.
A sleep problem.
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, lack of quality sleep is linked to a variety of physical diseases, mental health issues, social problems and is often the root cause of tragic accidents, like nuclear power plant meltdowns and deadly wrecks. The NHLB says 40 percent of people reported accidentally falling asleep during the day at least once a month. According to the 2022 Gallup Poll, 33 percent or 1 in 3 people reported their sleep as fair or poor.
For nearly a decade, Jessica struggled to sleep, and it was impacting her health and her family. She said she turned into a cranky person, always drinking too much coffee and barely making it through the day.
“There was a lot of tension in my house, unnecessary tension,” she said.
A friend of hers sold CBD from a company called Green Compass and thought their Broad Spectrum CBD Tincture could help Jessica. She was hesitant and skeptical, but she eventually gave in, desperate for a solution. That first night, she slept the entire night through. Shocked, she wondered if it was just a placebo effect, but she slept great for a whole week and then a whole month.
“My whole attitude changed. It was like I was the way I was supposed to be,” she said.

Jessica’s stress and irritability vanished, and she could interact with her family the way she wanted. She told her husband, Miguel, about the results and had him try one of the Reduce Topical Pain Cream with CBD because playing sports when he was younger caused a lot of wear and tare on his body. She said it took away his pain in 10 minutes. He was so impressed, and thought they should sell it because he knew a lot of people who would benefit from it. Miguel signed up to become a Green Compass Advocate, and after seeing his success, Jessica took some time off from teaching to try it herself.
What is Multi-Level Marketing & Direct Sales?
Jessica became an advocate or a Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Direct Salesperson with Green Compass. She sells directly to people via relationship marketing, social media marketing, event marketing, pop-up shops and from a website provided by the company. She doesn't have to carry inventory unless she is doing a popup store, so there's little overhead.

She also recruits anyone who also wants to sell the product. When someone else joins through her, they become a part of her team or “downline,” and she makes a commission on all their sales. Likewise, the individual who recruited Jessica makes commissions on her sales and is a part of Jessica’s “upline.”
Coincidentally, this system also comes with some stigma.
MLMs are Not Pyramid Schemes
Many people associate the MLM system with pyramid schemes, but according to the Federal Trade Commission, MLM systems in of themselves are not scams. Learn how to tell the difference. Unfortunately, a string of scammers using them to create pyramid schemes caused the stigma.
Even if it isn’t a scam, many think it’s still impossible to make money with a MLM, but Jessica would disagree. She said it’s not a “get rich quick scheme,” but it is a business. Businesses require hard work and time, and that’s why many fail with direct sales. People assume it's easier than running a regular business.

Further, she said, this type of sales is not like a 9am-5pm job. Jessica’s hours are usually on nights and weekends. It also requires her to meet new people regularly to sell to and recruit from, which isn't always an easy thing to achieve. She said, it’s normal for people to question themselves, and it’s hard to push past those mental blocks to get out there and sell. Rejection comes often, she added, even from one’s own family and friends.
"This business isn’t for everybody, but if you are willing to put in the time and work it and work through the rejection, you will have a life people just dream about,” she said.
An Educator's View of Direct Sales
Despite a 24-year teaching career, Jessica commended MLMs as opportunities available to anyone, regardless of education.
“It’s not the same game anymore,” she said.

The American dream used to be going to school, then college, then getting a job, a family, a house, children and so on. Now, she says you might go to college for 10 years and end up working a job you didn’t train for or working for half of the pay you expected. Now, there are people who don’t have an education and are making millions with innovation, Crypto, products like Kangen water and start-ups. Jessica said still stresses the importance of education, but adds, there is no straight path anymore.
With that said, Jessica said her best advice to people would be to, “Continue with your dreams. Don’t let people with an opinion [stop you]. You can’t take that [opinion] to the bank.”
Jessica also advised that if you are going to sell something, make sure it’s a necessity, and not a luxury. If your product is a need, she said, then it is pandemic and recession proof.
Is CBD a Need or a Luxury?
Jessica said CBD is not a luxury but a need because it creates homeostasis in the human body. Physician’s Lab reports that CBD reduces stress and inflammtion. It also reduces anxiety, improves sleep and promote overall wellness. Why, how?

According to Clifford Morris, Ph.D. Cand., Chief Chemist and Research Scientist, humans epigenetically (how environment affects genes) coevolved (when two things evolve together) to create a dependence on hemp, which means that we actually developed a system that needs hemp byproducts for our bodies to function properly. This system in our bodies is called the endocannabinoid system, which interacts with CBD to balance and influence the nervous system as well as how our bodies read our DNA.
Jessica said there are cannibinoid receptors throughout the human body, but they are empty because most people stopped ingesting hemp and its byproducts in the late 1930s after taxes, racism and social manipulation made it uneconomical and eventually illegal. The endocannabinoid system cannot function unless CBD fills in those empty receptors.
Jessica added that when a person uses legitimate CBD products, those receptors slowly fill up, the body returns to homeostasis. The individual doesn’t have to keep taking CBD products except on an as needed basis because once filled, the receptors pretty much stay filled.
3 Things to Remember About How CBD Works
Jessica said that a lot of people have tried CBD and think it didn't work for them, but really there are reasons for that.
1. Used Incorrectly:
Jessica said sometimes the product works right away, but most of the time results require consistent doses for at least 3 months at a minimum. This is due to the time it takes to fill up those receptors. Consumers are expecting an immediate result, but that’s not how CBD works. Jessica said people have been told this is how it works by unregulated companies.
2. No Regulation:
The CBD industry is ripe with misinformation because it's an unregulated product. According to their website, the FDA has issued warnings for a variety of specific CBD brands and products since 2017, citing inaccurate information regarding CBD levels and the presence of other, sometimes, harmful materials.
3. Bad growing practices:
Jessica said that the hemp flower is a scavenger flower and soaks up pollutants out of the air and soil, which makes cannibinoids defective. Hemp farmers need to set up their farms in such a way so that the crop isn't exposed to any pollutants.
That’s why Jessica said Green Compass’s products are unique. Their CBD is 100% USDA Certified Organic, and each batch is traced from seed to package. Plus, each product has a barcode that shows third-party verification of the CBD’s source and quality. Jessica said that this verification is the only way people can know for sure that they are getting effective CBD.

Success Despite Stigma
In addition to battling stigma through education and conversations one person at a time, Jessica also faces the stigmas of business success, not only as a woman but also as a Christian.

Jessica advises those who harbor fear of the morality of business and capitalism and urges them not to let that get in their way.
“Our purpose in life is to serve and help people, and He knows money is needed to do that,” she said. “The root of all evil is not money. It’s what you do with it, what your intention is.”
Jessica said her success has helped others in multiple ways. The product she sells benefits others' wellbeing and improves their success in life, so they have more to share with more people. From the money Jessica has earned, she's been able to help her children and family, and she's expanded her reach to other families in need by donating clothing, shoes, toys and school supplies to an orphanage of 200 kids in Mexico.
"Those are the types of things that this business is able to give you," she said.
